Durgapur is a vibrant and rapidly developing city located in the state of West Bengal, approximately 160 kms to the north of Kolkata. It was a dream child of the great visionary Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, the second chief minister of the state. The well laid out industrial township was designed by Joseph Allen Stein and Benjamin Polk Durgapur is popularly known as Steel City . Durgapur Steel Plant (DSP) and Alloy Steel Plant (ASP) are the two biggest industrial units around which the city and the other industries and ancillary units came up over time. Other major industries in Durgapur are Durgapur Projects Limited (DPL), Durgapur Chemicals Limited (DCL), Bharat Ophthalmic Glass Limited (BOGL), Hindustan Fertilizer Corporation (HFC), Phillips Carbon Black Limited (PCBL), ACC Babcock Limited (ABL), Durgapur Thermal Power Station (DTPS) and Graphite India Limited(GIL).
Today the Govt. of West Bengal is taking initiatives to develop Durgapur as an IT hub so that it can be an alternative destination to Kolkata for IT/ITeS companies. A 100 acre zone has been specially earmarked for IT projects in the Bidhannagar area. Setting up of Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) at Durgapur is also a step in this direction. The service industry too is growing rapidly in the city.
